Church Publishing announces publication of the Dakota Hymnal

NEW YORK—Church Publishing, the publisher of official worship materials, books, music, and digital ministry resources for The Episcopal Church, has recently published Wakan Cekiye Odowan / The Dakota Hymnal.

For the first time since it was authorized in 1893, congregations, families, and individuals around the world will have access to a comprehensive collection of hymns in the Dakota/Lakota language ensuring its deep spiritual traditions will endure for future generations. First authorized in 1893, the hymnal represents years of collaboration between Dakota and Lakota elders, linguists, musicians, and faith leaders committed to preserving and celebrating Lakota heritage through sacred music.

From The Episcopal Diocese of South Dakota, the hymnal contains 177 traditional hymns, including the "Doxology," "Lo, He Comes with Clouds Descending," "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel," "My God, and is Thy Table Spread," among others, and service music as well.

According to a 2023 report, Lakota is the third most popular language in the Episcopal church. The publication of this hymnal addresses a centuries-long scarcity of accessible worship materials for Dakota- and Lakota-speaking communities. These hymns reflect the core of church experiences in the territory, both on reservations and off.

"Wakan Cekiye Odowan / The Dakota Hymnal is a testament to our commitment to honoring Indigenous voices and ensuring that sacred traditions continue to thrive," said Airié Stuart, senior vice president and publisher of Church Publishing Incorporated. "Our goal has always been to provide meaningful resources that enrich spiritual lives while also nurturing cultural heritage."

Parishes may qualify for a grant of Wakan Cekiye Odowan / The Dakota Hymnal. For more information, contact The Bible & Common Prayer Book Society at biblesandprayerbooks@gmail.com.
